Long ago, in the Japanese imperial court, the Chinese emperor gave the Japanese emperor a giant panda as a symbol of peace. Since then, the Japanese emperor has entrusted his courtiers (players) with the difficult task of caring for the animal by tending his bamboo garden.
In Takenoko, players will cultivate plots of land, water them, and, with the help of the imperial gardener, grow one of three species of bamboo (green, yellow, and pink) to maintain this bamboo garden.
