In the Age of Exploration, players embark on new expeditions far from their homeland. They are trying to discover and inhabit an as yet unknown island, and each player tries to explore one part of it by placing landscape tiles. They grant the player resources and are used to build buildings with special abilities. Obstacles on the island must be cleared in order to explore the island further. Players will have to build valuable statues and supply ships will deliver supplies from the old world necessary for a successful settler on Cooper's Island.
A special feature of Cooper Island is the way players mark their victory points. They sail ships around the island to show their progress. On their way around the island, they find smaller islands off the coast that provide valuable benefits. After five rounds of Cooper Island, the game ends, and the player who developed the most and went further with their ships will win.
