Jelgava board games club

Having been in the hobby of board games for several years, it is not uncommon to hear and be interested in the development of the hobby in different countries. It turns out that abroad it is very popular to participate in certain clubs/groups where people meet regularly with one goal - to play games. There are even dedicated board game cafes. Brain Games has also been organizing similar type of game nights for several years, but they mostly take place in Riga and I've always had problems attending them, so I've only been to a few all the time. But luckily, with our family's move to Jelgava, around the same time, I think the first regional game club was formed, which I will also tell you about this time.

The main founders, heart and soul of the club are Edgars and Daina, who created the club in April of this year, which is organized as a Facebook page. Gaming evenings take place once every two weeks, stimulating the business of the local cafe in Jelgava, which is already used to it and kindly allocates space to regular gamblers.

After the first time I went to the club, I was very excited and I have not been late even once. First of all, I am extremely pleased and fascinated by people's personalities. Especially as a newcomer in a completely foreign city, this is a great opportunity to meet very friendly, knowledgeable and versatile people who not only have the same hobby as you, but also many other interesting topics to discuss at the gaming table.

Secondly, in my opinion, this is the most organized club in Latvia, because every time before the game night we can choose the games we will play in a survey. Club members have combined their boardgamegeek.com registered collection games and even have a voting system. The most popular games are taken to the next game night, but this does not prevent anyone from bringing a special treasure of the collection, which is also often managed to be played during the evening. After each game night, Edgars and Daina write a review of the evening, including the winners, describing the games played and most importantly the emotions. The descriptions are of a very high quality and each time supplemented with photos from the evening. They are so interesting that whenever the description of the previous night appears, I stop what I'm doing, look at the description and immerse myself in the memories of the great time I had.

The club also continues to grow and has now acquired a kind of maturity that reliably attracts more than ten players every time, which is a very comfortable number to divide into groups and each choose a game to play. The club features all kinds of games, from party games like Dixit , to co-op games like Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island, and occasionally even something as hard as A Game of Thrones 2nd edition.

I think that this is an excellent example for other cities as well, that the culture of board games in Latvia is developing very rapidly, and perhaps something like this can happen in other places as well. I recommend that everyone try to attend such a game night, because it can turn the hobby into something that has never been seen before and give completely new emotions even to experienced players. Jelgava board games club rating 10 out of 10.
